Does Chesterton mean Catholic as in Catholic church? or Caholic as in universal faith?
If he means the Catholic church - man has that sucka fallen from it's original intentions - so much so - it resembles a polit bureau more than a church.

He means Catholic as in Roman Catholic.

A bit abbreviated. The full quote ends "..saves a man from the awful indignity of being a child of his time."
