New in France Riots: Firearms

From the AP:

The use of firearms added a dangerous new dimension. Firearms are widespread in France, and police generally carry guns. Guns, though, were rarely used in the 2005 riots that spread to poor housing projects nationwide.

Police are facing "a situation that is far worse than that of 2005," said Ribeiro, national secretary of the Synergie officers union.

"Our colleagues will not allow themselves to be fired upon indefinitely without responding," he warned on RTL radio. "They will be placed in situations which will become untenable."

It is just going to get worse. IF one is thinking about traveling to Europe and seeing the "sights", they had better do it soon. In ten years, I wager, things will already have begun to change drastically.

I'm not saying Europe will be under the Caliph or anything. I just think changes will already be in play. Either laxity will encourage more riots and make many tourist sites more dangerous than the Middle East, or crackdowns will take the form of heavy-handed government intervention that will likewise make Europe less inviting.

If you think that is depressing, ask me about my vision of Europe in 25 years, or 50 years....

Just my deux cents!

E-mail me your vision on Europe +25 years and I'll put it on the blog. Or if you blog it I'll put it on here too.
