"As a plow goes into a dirt field"

From here:

10. A husband has sex with his wife, as a plow goes into a dirt field.

The Quran in Sura (Chapter) 2:223 says:

Your women are your fields, so go into your fields whichever way you like
. . . . (MAS Abdel Haleem, The Qur’an, Oxford UP, 2004)

We should make no mistake about this verse. It includes sexual positions. In a footnote to this verse, Haleem says that Muslims in Medina heard from the Jews that "a child born from a woman approached from behind would have a squint."

The hadith are the reports of Muhammad’s words and actions outside of the Quran.
Two reliable hadith collectors and editors are Bukhari (d. 870), Muslim (d. 875). After the Quran, the hadith come second in importance and sacredness among the vast majority of Muslims around the world.

Since the hadith is explicit, the readers are invited to click here and read for
themselves, at their own discretion: Muslim nos.
3363-3365.

See these parallel hadith
here
and here.

We should have no doubt that the husband controlled their sex life. If a woman does not want to have sex, then angels curse her.

. . . "If a man invites his wife to sleep with him and she refuses to come to
him, then the angels send their curses on her till morning
."
(Bukhari)

Here is the back-up article.
This one also provides back up material.

I find this weird - women as men's property - and we can basically do with them what we like (it's quite the sexually sadistic view of the world - and would match up with with some Muslims in the west I have met and their infidelities while here).

Islam: By men, for men.

It's a little like the pot calling the kettle black don't you think?

Yo Umm...check out my latest blog on this for more elaboration of men and women in this faith (or at least what I think the Christian faith has missed the mark in interpretation). Tell me if Islam has that at it's core?

Hi Societyvs,

My point is that both Christianity and Islam have problematic texts that are used to support extremely misogynistic and patriarchal interpretations. Therefore, we can equally say:

Christianity: By men, for men.

Of course, Christian texts can be read and interpreted in gender-equality based ways, but then so can Islamic texts.

That's why I (and so many like me) am perfectly happy being both Muslim and feminist

Hi Umm Yasmin,

We have no verse in the New Testament that even approaches this kind of material in the Quran actually. And we certainly don't have that wonderful "udrubuhunna" instruction, that is, that men should hit insolent women.

I know you learn to say these things reflexively and without really thinking about them Um Yasmin, but a genuine search of the Bible will show very clearly that women are much more respected in Christianity than in Islam.

Hmmm... from the religion that blames Eve for the downfall of humanity.

Have you read much about what wadribhunna means? And the sociology of it? That tribal pre-Islamic male leaders were responsible for disciplining members of their tribe, and the form that daraba takes precludes physical violence! That daraba is a safety measure to stop domestic violence (of which the Christian US and Australia suffers so tragically).
