Madonna and Child


I believe that the Madonna and Child is either the most-painted scene ever, or the second most-painted scene after the crucifixion. Here is an Asian version of the figure, showing how Christianity truly break every cultural boundary and is, in its very essence, translatable.

I like that baby Jesus is wearing little booties. :) Really, isn't he barefoot in all the European paintings. I wonder if barefeet have some particular, and undesired, significance in Asian culture.

Its always fascinating to me to see how different culture protray that same image. I especially like the adaptations from Vailankanni.

I have seen many black Jesus babies in depictions in the US. A black Santa Claus or two, too.
