CNN: Saudi Judge Refuses to annul marriage of girl, 8

Actually, if you read the legal aspects of the case everything is indeed according to shari'a as far as I can tell. The mother does not have a right to file this case, and as long as the little girl's husband agrees to wait until puberty to have sex with her then he has fulfilled his obligations. Also, the giving of a daughter in marriage to settle a debt is entirely permissible in Islamic law. The fact that the man is 47 and the girl is eight is not material at all. The girl is a minor and so she has no say in this matter. Her father is her guardian, and then her husband is after the marriage.

Anyway, read it all here:

This is sick and they know it we know it and god knows it... she's too young to marry... she's of adoption age not marriagiable age. So how are they going to know she's not being abused?? Apparently, they aren't listening to reason now and the child isn't going to be given a voice... she subsists as a slave. This girl's life is in jeopardy and her mother knows it but NO... procedure must be followed; ridiculous. It's out and out slavery and to force slavery on an 8 year old child is absolutely sick and perferted... it's sexual slavery at it's worst. It's a court and a country full of perferts!

Wow! ZERO comments. I just can't believe none from the High Moralists is screaming out against this perversion. I don't know where to start on how a child been sold off to an old man is soooooo wrong. I feel so sick to my stomach that the West is not up in arms demanding an end to this barbaric so called "tradition".

It is sad that there is little the West can do to help this girl and others like her. Child marriages in the Middle East and Africa are nothing new. Women and girls are mere chattel to be sold and given away at a man's whim. Genital mutilation in some of these same parts still goes on. These people have their traditions that, in our eyes, are barbaric; but what can we do? Women all over the world need to speak out about these issues and see if we can help these poor women/girls. Perhaps Hillary Clinton can lead the way.

Amazing.

I thought this was already the modern age, when people aren't treated as objects. And here we are, having a man, who supposedly represents the law, APPROVE of such a transaction -- a daughter for the payment of a debt. Wow.

Barbaric is such an understatement. I don't know where to start.

Actually, wasn't the prophet's favorite wife, aisha, 6 years old when they got married, with the marriage consumated when she was 9?

In the Bible children were taken to settle debts. I don't agree with this man giving his child away, but the US cannot and shouldnot do anything. We have enough problems here because we have always tried to save the world from itself. Let's talk about unemployment, imigration, bailouts, coruption...none of which we seem to have no solution to.

Yes, and between the ages of 6 and 9 the blessed prophet had "sex" between her thighs (and screams).

Hello Anonymous,

Well, you have identified one of the key reasons that folks are leaving Islam these days. But the fact of the matter is that this judge interpreted and applied the shari'a correctly. This is genuine Islam.

And yes, you are right in declaiming the West. Because the West has censored itself, its future will be Islam. The idea that human rights can be maintained without a substantial Christian population is a myth. It will not happen. (read this.)

This is a fundamentalist backward society that still craves for humiliating traditions that is deleterious to the innocents. The judge amazed me by his decision, there are no laws to protect this 8 year old child in a so-called modern society of misguided laws. I agree it is absolutely sick and perverted, "it's sexual slavery". What a SHAME???
These Saudi prince(s), live like elitists, in avarice and greed, and ignore the poor and children...TERRIBLE< man...

What a skewed viewpoint. This comment is the most outrageous, because it entirely skips the fact of child sexual abuse and child slavery. It seems strange that this person would say that they disagree with the child being given to settle a debt, but not mention anything about her rights to be a child, free from harm, and free from perversion.... If this person had said that the US should make sure that child sexual abuse stops before we help others in other countries, I would appreciate this point of view more, as it would be a logical conclusion to make.

This whole case is terrible - there is no protection for that young girl - and even if she hits puberty at 11 (like I did), that is still WAY too young to choose to have consenting sex with anyone, much less a 47 year old man. It pains me that there is nothing that can be done, either in Saudi Arabia, or in our own country. I wish there was some peaceful way to stop the predators of our world from having their way. I pray for that little girl, and all those like her.

Islam is a curse upon mankind. What a sick joke it is. No God worthy of the name would have dictated the Koran. How can so many people be so ignorant ?
For the record. I don't believe in any God,so I'm not comparing Islam to anything but morality.

Not all religions are same. For me Islam is the worst religion that has come into this world till now. The Italian prime minister was right. The world should fight a united crusade against Islam. Political correctness be damned1

Islam is not the problem. I have read the Quran, and it's actually a very beautiful book. The problem is the fundamentalists - as it is on all religions, including Christianity. The ones who will use anything to prove their point of view, even when it's not believed or accepted by the general population. It is the fundamentalists who must recognize the inherent evilness of their actions, by actually listening to HIM. Blessings to this girl.

exactly how Allah would have wanted it...

F'n Islam and all religions are for the weak of mind - and this is what U get w/ that kind of feeble mentality.

My god is better than your god! If U don't agree I'll kill U in his name...

What does it say about a society that allows an old man to marry a child. It is pathetic and debases humanity. How can a child act as a wife for this man. She cannot. She is frankly his slave. Sold into slavery by her father who views her as a commodity -- a transaction.

The whole thing make no sense. Why would any culture accept this? There is nothing gained -- the child is lost, the man is not a man, the father is not a father. It's really as repulsive as cannibalism.

Are we going to ignore it if some society decides to start eating one another.

"If you accept it; you agree to it"

That's just one of many horrible incidents against child victims in the cruel world of Islam. And that does not even include the injustices done to women in that part of the world.

The fact that the Saudis were following Islamic Sharia law is not the issue. The issue is that these people have laws that they never bothered to amend. And being religious state laws they are very difficult or impossible to change. (Another glaring proof for the separation of church and state.)

The Nazis had a law to slaughter Jews but that doesn't make it acceptable. There are immoral and humanly unacceptable laws that violate human rights and dignity. Those laws, and countries that support them, must be opposed (and the internet is good tool against them). The lesson here is the alarming degree to how far behind the times that state is and the urgent need for it to grow from its age of savagery against children, women, and society.

As for the Quran, there are a lot of ugly things in it, in the Hadiths, and in the Sharia law---all of which comprise the religious, political, and social system of Islam. Islam is not defined solely by the Quran, since Islam is not merely a religion but also a system of government with social laws. Muslims need to change and update their religion just as Christians and Jews have, if they want to get out of the rut that they're in. The catch is, of course, they can't do this without being slaughtered. I.e., they're in a black hole.
